Aboyne and the surrounding area have some spectacular annual events and visitor attractions.

Annual Events

Aboyne Highland Games

Saturday 5th August 2017

Having run for over 140 years, the Aboyne Games have attracted thousands of visitors to witness the yearly show of Scottish culture in one of the most scenic parts of Aberdeenshire. The games include: Pipe Band Marching, Hammer Throwing, Tossing the Caber, Shot Put, Tug O’ War, Running Races, Highland Dancing and Fiddling.The Games take place on the Aboyne Green, situated in the centre of the village, on the first Saturday in August. Competitions commence at 10.30 and continue until approximately 17.30.

Braemar Gathering

The Gathering is always held on the first Saturday in September, it is world famous for its friendship and hospitality. Every Gathering is a memorable occasion and this year will be no exception.
International athletes will be among those taking part in the "heavy" and "track" events. Pipers and dancers and teams from H.M. Forces will compete in the InterServices Unit Tug of War Championship and in the Services Medley Relay Race. A Hill Race is run up Morrone and Scottish Pipe Bands will be to the fore with the customary Massed Pipe Bands appearing.

Lonach Highland Gathering and Games

Always held on the 4th Saturday in August the Lonach Highland Gathering and Games is considered to be the largest non-military march in the UK.
The games feature piping competitions, Highland dancing, heavy competitions and other sporting events. Founded by The Lonach Highland and Friendly Society in 1823. The society continues its original mission of preserving Highland dress and “supporting loyal, peaceful, and manly conduct; and the promotion of social and benevolent feelings among the inhabitants of the district.

Royal Lochnagar Distillery

Neighbouring Balmoral Castle, Royal Lochnagar is the perfect place to discover how Scotch Whisky is made. Watch as our team of operators tend to our traditional mashtun, gleaming copper stills and fill casks at our traditional distillery, which retains much of its original charm. The tour ends with a dram of the award-winning Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old Single Highland Malt.

Scotland's Castle Trail

With over 300 castles, stately homes and ruins dotting its landscape, Aberdeenshire is unsurprisingly known as 'Scotland's Castle Country.' There are more castles per acre here than anywhere else in the UK.
