After 18-months of negotiation, we are delighted to announce that the President of the PGA will be coming especially to Aboyne on Thursday 1st March to give an evening presentation entitled ‘Inside the Ryder Cup Locker Room - an audience with PGA President Sandy Jones’.

Sandy has been responsible for the running of the Ryder Cup since he took up office as CEO of the PGA in 1981. You can read his golfing biography below.

His talk will cover the build up to the Ryder Cup in 2018 in Paris, reflections on Gleneagles and life inside the PGA in a fascinating Q&A.

Members and their guests should arrive at 7PM for a prompt 7.30PM start. Stovies will be served. Sandy will give a very informal talk for around 40 minutes on the workings of the PGA, history of the Ryder Cup and some anecdotes.

We will then take a break during which we will hold a live auction of some signed PGA memorabilia which Sandy has kindly sourced - proceeds will go towards club funds. We will also have a raffle and have been able to source some valuable prizes but would be pleased to see any additional donations from members.

The second half of Sandy's talk will be thrown open to an audience Q&A with a wide ranging agenda of topics. We aim to finish around 10.30PM as Sandy has to travel that evening to Stirling for his next commitment.

Tickets are £10 per head for members which includes your Stovies. Members can invite one guest who will pay £15. Tickets can be purchased from our Director of Golf (Fraser Dunlop) who is contactable on 013398 86328 (ext One) or email: pro@fraserdunlopgolf.co.uk

As we expect a high level of interest in this evening these tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable. Members have first refusal on tickets with a closing date of Sunday 18th February at 9PM. Thereafter, we will offer any remaining tickets to our Deeside reciprocal clubs at a cost of £15/head. You will appreciate we are constrained on fire regulations and seating numbers so would urge you to book early to secure your place and avoid disappointment.

As a hobby between 1970 and 1980 Sandy worked in his local club committee before being asked in 1974 to join the Executive Committee of the Lanarkshire Golf Association. In 1978 he was President of this Association during its Silver Jubilee Year and to this date is still the youngest ever President of any County Association in Scotland.

In 1980 Sandy joined as staff of the Professional Golfers’ Association in a full time capacity of secretary to the PGA in Scotland and held this post until 1991 when he was invited to be the Chief Executive of the PGA of Great Britain and Ireland based at their Belfry headquarters.

He has been involved in the Ryder Cup since the early 1980’s working closely with Tony Jacklin in 1987 at Muirfield Village when the European Team successfully won the match for the first time ever on American soil. He holds various posts within the world of golf, such as Chairman of the PGAs of Europe. A Ryder Cup Board Member for over 25 years, he was heavily involved in the awarding of the match to Scotland in 2014.

Sandy is a leading Executive in the PGA World Alliance and a major influence in the ongoing development of the professional game throughout the world.

It was Sandy’s vision in 1992 that reorganised the PGA training programme and built the education facility and team which now delivers what is universally recognised as the best education programme within the world of golf.

Sandy became a Member of the British Institute of Management in April 1984 and was admitted as a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute in December 2006, which is the highest category of membership within the Institute.

In 2007 Sandy was voted by a leading American golf magazine to be the 13th most influential person in the world of golf, an outstanding accolade.

In 2008 he was awarded the Gold Medal from the Spanish Golf Federation for services to golf in Europe. Past winners of this award have included Seve Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus and Michael Bonallack.

In 2009 he was recognized by The University of Birmingham by being awarded an Honorary Doctorate for outstanding services to sport and golf.

On 28th April 2016 Sandy succeeded Colin Montgomerie to become President of the Golf Foundation, a recognized golf charity which makes golf and its benefits available to young people, and helps them ‘Start, Learn and Stay’ in the sport.

In March 2017 Sandy stepped aside from his role as Chief Executive after 25 years in the position. In recognition of his long service, the PGA board rewarded him with the role of Executive President.
